Reading the Natal Chart

THE MAP BEFORE THE MEANINGOpen this bookmark
01

A reading begins by naming what is actually present in the birth chart before deciding what it may mean.

01THE ORIGINAL RECORD

The chart you are born with

The natal chart arranges the available Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars. Readers first identify the stems, branches, yin and yang, Five Elements, season, and repeated or interacting patterns.

원국Wonguk

The original birth chart used as the foundation of a reading.

일간Day Master

The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar and the central reference point of the chart.

일주Day Pillar

The complete Day Pillar: one Heavenly Stem above one Earthly Branch.

02SEASONAL CONTEXT

Why the month matters

The Month Branch places the chart inside a season. That seasonal context changes how available or supported an element may be, so the same character can be read differently in different charts.

월령Month Command

The seasonal influence represented by the Month Branch.

통근Root

A stem finding related elemental support in one or more branches.

투간Visible Stem

An influence becoming visible in the Heavenly Stems.
